The Tooth Extraction Process: What To Expect

INITIAL CONSULTATION

First, Dr. Nguyen will meet with you, and make sure extractions are your best option for treatment. At our office, we only recommend extractions as a last resort if other treatments are not viable.

SEDATION AND PREP

At your extraction appointment, Dr. Nguyen will begin by cleaning and numbing the treatment area. This ensures you’ll feel comfortable throughout your extraction. We also offer dental sedation in Placentia at Tranquility Dental Arts.

BASIC EXTRACTION

In a basic extraction, Dr. Nguyen will use a few special tools to move your tooth around and loosen it. Then, she’ll grab it with a pair of dental forceps and pull it out. Then, she’ll clean and suture the area so that your mouth heals properly.

SURGICAL EXTRACTION

In a surgical extraction, Dr. Nguyen will make an opening into your gums, then “section” the tooth, cutting it into pieces. Then, she’ll remove each piece until the tooth has been fully extracted, and suture the area shut.

Basic tooth extractions are used to remove decayed or damaged teeth that can’t be saved with alternative treatments, or to prepare for other dental procedures like dentures or implants. In this process at our Placentia office, Dr. Nguyen simply numbs the area, then wiggles the tooth loose and pulls it out with dental instruments.

Wisdom teeth come out a lot later than the other teeth, often between the ages of 17-25. Some people don’t have problems with their wisdom teeth. But for some patients, they can damage the nearby teeth, raise the risk of oral infections, and cause other oral health issues. Surgical extractions are necessary for impacted wisdom teeth. In this process, Dr. Nguyen will open up the gum, cut the tooth into small pieces, and extract it bit-by-bit.
